Neuromodulators Beyond Cosmetic Use
December 18, 2025

While Botox and other neuromodulators like Daxxify are known for cosmetic results, they also have well studied medical applications that can significantly improve your quality of life. Neuromodulators help by relaxing muscles that are working too hard or by blocking nerve signals that are overactive. Because of this, it can reduce pain, tension, spasms, and even excessive sweating in the areas where it’s placed.
In our clinic there are five common medical conditions our providers can effectively treat with neuromodulators: migraines, blepharospasms, hyperhidrosis, temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJD), and in some cases, trigeminal neuralgia.
Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJD)
Temporomandibular joint dysfunction affects the jaw and the muscles surrounding it. Patients with TMJD often report experiencing one or more of the following symptoms : jaw pain, teeth grinding, clenching, headaches, or “clicking” in the jaw. When neuromodulators are injected it can relax the overactive jaw muscles in the masseters and temporalis. Other areas may need to be treated like temples or trap muscles if compensation occurs.
Some of the benefits our patients report experiencing after treatment are fewer headaches, improved jaw mobility, and decreased jaw tension. Treatment times vary from patient to patient but typically every three to four months is recommended for treatment or when symptoms start to show again. Some patients can maintain relief for over six months. We always recommend talking to your dentist first to see if there is a different underlying reason for your TMJD such as malocclusion (misaligned bite).
Migraines
Patients who experience chronic migraines that are treated with neuromodulators report having less frequent migraines, shorter duration of attacks, or improved daily functioning. Neuromodulators work best for migraines that first begin with tension headaches then progress, although other types may be improved with neuromodulator treatment as well.
Neuromodulators can be strategically placed in the forehead, temples, back of the head, bridge of the nose, neck, or shoulders to help relieve these symptoms. During your consultation our providers will review your treatment plan with you before beginning, as injection sites and doses may vary. Treatments are typically repeated every three months.
Blepharospasm
When the brain sends the wrong signals to the eyelid muscles, it can cause frequent blinking or forced eye closure. Spasms may be triggered by factors such as stress or certain medications, and these involuntary contractions can be painful and irritating for patients who experience them.
Neuromodulators are injected around the upper and lower eyelids, outer corners of the eye, eyebrow area, or temples during treatment. Blepharospasms can be treated on both our Med Spa and Surgical sides of the office. Hyperhidrosis
Excessive sweating, often affecting the underarms, hands, and feet, is a condition known as hyperhidrosis. Treatment targets the nerve signals that trigger the sweat glands, effectively reducing sweating in the affected areas.
Patients report a significant reduction in sweating, increased comfort and confidence, and the ability to wear preferred clothing post treatment. The reduction in hyperhidrosis symptoms can kick in as soon as three to five days and full effects are seen within two weeks. Retreatment is recommended every three to four months.
Trigeminal Neuralgia
Trigeminal Neuralgia is a chronic neurological condition that affects the trigeminal nerve, which carries sensation from the face to the brain. It causes severe episodes of facial pain that patients often describe as sharp or stabbing. These painful attacks can be triggered by everyday activities such as talking, chewing, brushing teeth, or even wind blowing on their face. In some cases, neuromodulators can help reduce pain by calming overactive nerve signals and decreasing muscle tension in targeted areas.
Neuromodulator injections are usually a last resort option as research on the topic is not robust. Patients who respond well to neuromodulator treatment for trigeminal neuralgia are typically treated every 3 to 4 months or when symptoms return.
Insurance Coverage
While most neuromodulator treatments at Natural State Aesthetics are self-pay, certain medical conditions may qualify for partial or full insurance coverage depending on your plan and medical history. Patients seeking treatment for blepharospasms may be eligible for insurance coverage here. We require a referral on file from either a primary care provider or an eye doctor prior to being scheduled with Dr. Heymann.
For treatments outside of blepharospasm, insurance cannot be used at the time of your visit and services are paid out of pocket. However, many patients are able to use HSA or FSA funds, and our team can provide documentation that may help with potential reimbursement through your insurance provider.
Insurance requirements and coverage vary widely and are never guaranteed, but our providers are always happy to discuss your individual situation and walk you through any available options. Our goal is to keep the process as smooth and transparent as possible so you can focus on feeling your best and getting the relief you deserve.
Conclusion
We believe that everyone deserves to feel comfortable, confident, and free from chronic discomfort. Neuromodulators can provide proven relief for the conditions discussed, helping patients reclaim their quality of life.
